Superwhisper vs Wispr Flow: Which Should You Choose?

By Théo Belnou, maker of HoldTalk. Updated October 25, 2026. Prices and features checked on the official websites on the same date.

Short answer: choose Superwhisper if you want precise control over models and the option to keep the full workflow local. Pick Wispr Flow if you want a ready-to-use cloud experience across devices or for a team. If you only need simple local dictation on a Mac, HoldTalk is a narrower but more direct third option.

When should you choose Superwhisper?

Superwhisper is the strongest choice if you like configuring your tools. Each mode can use a local or cloud voice model, then add or skip language model processing.

The free plan is generous. The company lists unlimited dictation with local Whisper models, custom vocabulary, text replacements and up to two modes without AI processing. Pro adds cloud models, file transcription, unlimited modes, realtime features and meetings.

Its biggest advantage is adjustable privacy. With a local voice model and a local language model, Superwhisper says that no audio or text leaves your device. You can still select cloud models when you want their features.

This flexibility means more choices. You need to understand modes, pick models and know when a cloud step is active. That may feel excessive if you only want to speak and get text.

When should you choose Wispr Flow?

Wispr Flow aims for a more immediate setup. It turns speech into text in any app, learns names and jargon, and includes a dictionary and reusable snippets.

The free plan includes 2,000 words per week on desktop. Pro removes that word limit and adds team features, centralized billing, usage analytics and priority support. Higher plans add more administrative controls.

Wispr Flow works on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. Its Notetaker also handles meetings on Mac and Windows. This is a clear advantage if you move between devices or manage several users.

The tradeoff is that transcription runs in the cloud. Wispr says data is encrypted in transit and at rest. You can turn off model training, dictation cloud storage and context awareness, but the transcription itself is not fully local.

Which tool fits your work?

Why consider HoldTalk as a third option?

I built HoldTalk for a narrower need. You hold the fn key, speak, and the text appears at the cursor when you release it. It works in any app that accepts text.

Transcription uses Apple's engine on the Mac. Audio is not sent or recorded, and you do not need an account. The free plan includes 2,000 words per week.

HoldTalk does not replace every feature in the other two apps. It does not transcribe audio files, summarize meetings or offer rewriting modes. It also requires an Apple silicon Mac running macOS 26 or later.

Choose it when that limit matches the job: dictate without opening an interface, without a required subscription and without sending your voice to a server.

Try simpler local dictation

HoldTalk types in the app where your cursor is. Hold fn, speak, and release. Free up to 2,000 words per week, with no account.

Frequently asked questions

Which is more private, Superwhisper or Wispr Flow?

Superwhisper can run fully on-device when you select local voice and language models. Wispr Flow always transcribes in the cloud, with controls for storage and model training. HoldTalk transcribes on the Mac with Apple's engine and does not record audio.

Which app has the best free plan?

Superwhisper offers unlimited local dictation with up to two modes and no AI processing. Wispr Flow limits its free desktop plan to 2,000 words per week. HoldTalk also offers 2,000 words per week with no account.

Do Superwhisper and Wispr Flow work on Windows and mobile?

Yes. Both offer apps for Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. HoldTalk only supports Apple silicon Macs running macOS 26 or later.

Which app is better for meetings and audio files?

Superwhisper Pro includes file transcription and meeting features. Wispr Flow has a separate Notetaker with plan-based limits. HoldTalk only dictates text at the cursor.

Yes. HoldTalk focuses on one action: hold fn, speak, and release to type at the cursor. It does not include Superwhisper's advanced modes or Wispr Flow's team features.
